Amid a market awash with townhouses, Daniels Street in Byron Bay distinguishes itself with a rare and exceptional feature: no shared walls.
This design delivers enhanced privacy, peace and a more independent living experience, setting these four luxury residences apart from most typical multi-residential developments.
Brisbane and Byron Bay architectural practice Hogg and Lamb have created four houses tailored to their orientation to maximise winter sun, harness cooling breezes and ensure highly private indoor and outdoor spaces.
As practice co-founder Michael Hogg explains: “These are separate houses with no shared walls on their own block of land. We were really focused on how to create four distinct homes with lots of privacy. The added benefit of a design that eschews shared walls is more light – with townhouses you end up with darker interiors because you can’t place doors and windows in many areas.”
Maximising natural light and optimal orientation is central to the design of the Daniels St homes.
“The architectural approach focuses on the interaction between indoors and outdoors, especially on the ground level, which is very generous and promotes this open and serene indoor to outdoor style of living perfect for the Byron climate,” says Michael.
“The entire ground floor seamlessly extends to the lawn, pool, and covered outdoor seating area. Each home is thoughtfully designed around its unique orientation, with rooms strategically positioned to maximise comfort and elevate the living experience.”
In fact, it is this living experience that has informed much of the considered placement of rooms. Hogg and Lamb’s process is to deeply consider how a home will be used – how people will live, the things they need to do – so that spaces support those that live in them.
“In holiday homes you get groups of families together with their own internal dynamics, which creates a need for spaces that enable people to come together, and spaces where they can be apart,” says Michael.
“The ground floor unites everyone, while also providing a space where you can be apart but still hear what is happening – that’s why we have the lounge a little separate from the rest of the area.
“All of the bedrooms have full height sliding doors rather than just windows, and direct access to a balcony. These balconies to each of the bedrooms is part of giving people their own moments of solitude away from the rest of the house.”
A warm and natural colour palette further enhances the serenity of the Daniels Street properties. Timber, warm whites and warm greys across a curated suite of materials lets the beauty of Byron do the talking.
“The colours of the landscape - the blue sky, the crisp shadows, the green of the lawn and the colours in the plantings become more of a feature with this warm palette than if the house had many contrasting materials,” says Michael.
This considered design approach creates a series of homes that stand out and are befitting of their unique location in Byron’s ‘Golden Mile’, just 250m to Clarkes beach, 900m to the heart of Byron and at the start of the Cape Byron Lighthouse Walk.
With completion anticipated in early 2025, we can’t wait to showcase the final product.
